Roblox has been down for days and it's not due to Chipotle.
Roblox has been down for more than two days, with the game and its associated website offline for millions of players. The hugely popular game-creating platform first started having problems on October 28 at 7PM ET. Roblox initially said it was "working hard to get things back to normal," and that it had "identified the root cause as [a] internal system problem."
On Sunday, the company said in a tweet that it had identified the root cause of the issue and a solution, but did not elaborate on what they were, and did not anticipate when the site would be working again.
In a statement to The Verge late Saturday, Roblox confirmed that its platform was not down due to an "external intrusion" and that the company is working "round the clock" to resolve the massive outage. “We believe we have identified an underlying internal cause of the outage, with no evidence of external intrusion,” a Roblox spokesperson says. "We are in the process of performing the necessary engineering and maintenance work to get Roblox back up and running as soon as possible. We apologize that our community cannot be on Roblox during this time."
Initially, some Roblox players speculated that the outage might be related to a Chipotle promotion in the game. Chipotle is giving away $1 million worth of free burritos on Roblox as part of an in-game Halloween event. The experience went live on October 28 at 6:30 pm. ET, just before the widespread Roblox outage began.
However, Roblox revealed that its issues were not related to Chipotle promotions. "We are aware that this outage was not related to any specific experience or partnership on the platform," the official Roblox Twitter account says.
It's a surprisingly long outage for Roblox, with players still waiting to hear when the game will return. The main Roblox site is offline in maintenance mode, and the status page was only updated on Saturday after more than 24 hours.
Roblox is very popular, especially with children - more than 50 percent of Roblox players are under the age of 13. More than 40 million people play it daily, and its popularity has increased by 2020 during the pandemic. Millions of people build games, apps, platforms, or as you like to describe it, to play games, attend gigs, and even show up at award shows.
