Patreon subscriptions sold on iOS will soon incur Apple's 30 percent fee

Patreon subscriptions sold on iOS apps will soon incur Apple's 30 percent commission on in-app purchases. In a post on Monday, Patreon said Apple is forcing the platform to use the company's in-app payment system starting in November or "risk being kicked out of the App Store."

As part of the change, creators will have to switch to Patreon's subscription billing method to keep earning money through the platform's iOS app. That means Apple's 30 percent commission will apply when a new subscription is initially purchased, as well as each time it's renewed. To help offset the costs of the new fee, Patreon will give creators the option to automatically increase their prices in the iOS app.

The fee will only apply to subscriptions purchased on Patreon's iOS app starting November 4, 2024. Existing subscriptions on Patreon will not be affected by this change, nor will subscriptions sold on Patreon's website or Android app. But because Patreon already has a set of platform fees, Apple's commission will only result in creators getting less money for their work. "Unless creators choose to bear the Apple App Store fees themselves, new transactions in the Patreon iOS app will be more expensive than similar purchases on the web due to Apple's App Store fees," Patreon writes. Until this year, Patreon was allowed to avoid Apple's 30 percent commission by using an alternative payment processor. In 2021, Patreon CEO Jack Conte said during an interview with Decoder that it "does not have an exclusive contract with Apple" and that the company "has had to deal with the same App Store policies and review process as anyone else." He added that Apple has abandoned Patreon because "users don't come to Patreon to find creators and content." But last year, Patreon announced it would have to switch to Apple's in-app payment system, with Apple's 30 percent commission on digital goods set to take effect in early 2024. Patreon said Apple would extend this fee to new memberships and subscriptions at the end of the year.
