Netflix's mobile gaming platform expands to Spain, Italy
It's only been a few months since Netflix confirmed plans to include games as part of its subscription, and after initial testing in Poland, the streamer is opening up a selection of Android titles to subscribers in Spain and Italy. While Netflix has had a few promotional titles before, with recent tie-ins for everything from Oculus VR to PC gamers on Steam, the experience has been built into its app.
Netflix Game Test is currently only available on Android, while tweets from local accounts in Spain and Italy suggest it still works by pushing customers to the Google Play Store. There, they can install titles that are playable as part of their general membership. Once installed, players can launch them from the main Netflix app, but it's not the same as watching a movie as players are transferred to the game's own app. There are five games to choose from: Shooting Hoops, Card Blast, Teeter Up, Stranger Things: 1984, and Stranger Things 3.
A significant change is already visible in the screenshots, as the gaming section got its own section in the bottom navigation bar, which should make it more visible to people browsing the app. When they announced the effort in July, Netflix said, "Games will be included in members' Netflix subscriptions at no additional cost, similar to movies and series. Initially, we focused primarily on games for mobile devices." focused." will focus."
Today's tweet indicates that the company is "still in the early stages of our gaming experience," without revealing when it might be available in the US. If you're desperate for signs, the most telling factor is probably that it's in English.
