Elon Musk is moving X and SpaceX to Texas

Elon Musk said he plans to move the headquarters of X and SpaceX from California to Texas. "Because of this law, and many others that have come before it, which attack both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas," Musk wrote in a tweet, referring to California's SAFETY Act (AB1955).

Signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday, it prevents schools from enforcing rules that require teachers to reveal a student's change in gender identity without their permission and prohibits retaliation against teachers who refuse to out a student, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Another post from Musk minutes later said that X, which is currently headquartered in San Francisco, "will be moving to Austin." Last year, a report from The Wall Street Journal revealed that Musk is planning to build his own community called Snailbrook outside Austin. He also reportedly plans to open a university in Austin.

Musk has recently moved other businesses. After a Delaware judge struck down Musk's $55 billion pay package in January (which shareholders eventually approved), Musk applied to move SpaceX's incorporation from Delaware to Texas. He also moved Tesla's headquarters to Texas in 2021 after California health officials shut down his Fremont factory during the Covid pandemic.
